Do you ever feel stuck for what to say to God? I know that I do and if I am not careful, my prayers end up being just about asking God for things. Mature relationships have more aspects to them than just asking for what we want and need.

I once decided to spend some time listening to people who say prayers in groups and what I noticed is most prayers were asking God for things such as health, relationships, financial matters, jobs, disagreements, etc. Their prayers were just like my prayers.

While there certainly is a place for putting our needs before God, a healthy relationship is much broader in its scope.

The Scriptures tell us to praise and worship God. Realizing that I fell into the “asking only” trap all the time, I started writing down some phrases to say to God that caused me to concentrate on God, His nature and character and not just my needs.

What I discovered is that these phrases often catch me reflecting on that particular aspect of God. I found myself far more able to seek God when I took my eyes of myself.

In The Catholic Guy Ministry we have rule that simply says, “Praise Before Please.”

Below are a few examples. Sometimes I read them all at once and other times just a few and find myself meditating on that aspect. Why don’t you make your own list? Why not list them in the comments below as I would love to add to my list.

Lord be glorified among us as we praise and worship you. You are deserving of honour and glory. All things come from you. You are beyond all things and above all things. You are worthy of being praised and adored. You are holy and nothing compares to you. Thank you for your love and grace and for allowing us to find you as we seek for you.

Father we make this prayer in the name of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen

  1. Thank you, Bruce! I will ponder more on this, and notice where I tend to move. . . .
    A few directions from my recent time . . . . . .
Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you. Ps 32
    Shepherd me, O God . . . . .
    Risen Jesus . . . .
Raboni! (with Mary of the Resurrection Garden) . . . .

  2. I struggle to concentrate when praying verbally or mentally. Writing to God, conversing with Him in writing focuses me and I’m not so distracted by wandering thoughts.

    Here are my contributions
Stop and consider God’s wonders Job 37:14
God you are infinitely greater and beyond our reach.
To the eternal King, immortal and invisible, the only God – to Him be honour and glory forever and ever Amen.

  4. We give You thanks , Lord, God Almighty, who are, and who were, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign. Rev 11 : 16-17

  5. Thank you Bruce, Rosemary and Team. Your “Seeking God” teaching journey is a wonderful idea and I’m especially enjoying praying the Rosary with you. What a wonderful way to pray together, even though we don’t know each other. I normally say the Rosary on my own, but it’s so much better praying it with you!
Here are some phrases of praise which I use in my prayers:-
O God, you are, Father of the fatherless,
    Home of the homeless,
    Founder of the lost,
    Healer of the sick,
    Freedom to the prisoners,
    Provider to the needy,
    Saviour to the sinners,
    God, you are our all.

  6. Thank you Bruce and Rosemary ,
For drawing me back to reciting the rosary. I used to recite the rosary every night with my husband, he knew the litany by heart and a few other prayers. 3.5 yrs ago my dear husband passed on to the Lord, I live alone and lost the habit of praying the rosary , now thanks to your daily prayers I have got back to reciting the rosary with you. I will try to continue to , even after this 21days.
    May God bless you.
