Lent is a season when we are invited in a very personal way by God to come back to Him. I might say, “OK I will, but I just have a few more things to work at. I just need a bit more time in prayer, just need to get to reconciliation, just need to mow the lawn…”
How amazing is God’s invitation to us? God invites me to drop the defences that I hold up between myself and Him. He offers me a Lenten season, as a matter of fact for my whole lifetime, to show me that He loves me unconditionally, no matter what I have done or how much I think I have hidden from Him.
From the first day of Lent, God’s call is clear. Return to me with your whole heart.
Yet we spend so much time trying to think of how to return and what to say, how to begin the conversation. If only we understood that we don’t have to say anything. We only have to show up.
What keeps us from accepting the invitation to something deeper in our lives with God? We feel in our hearts there are things we should say first, “wait…but…if only,” and “if God really knew about me…”
It doesn’t matter. None of it matters.
All we have to do is say to our Lord, “I’m here. Where do I start? Yes, I want to be with you.” This is the first step towards Him.
This is the invitation of each day of Lent. Will you accept it today?
PRAYER: Lord, here I am. This is me in all my imperfections and I need you today. You are inviting me to come to you with all my heart and I take a step towards you confident that I don’t need to get anything ready. Amen.
