When I was younger, I was certain that giving up chocolate for Lent was such a huge sacrifice and was convinced that God knew how hard that was for me because I really do love chocolate.
Other times I have given up something that I felt very attached to or changed a bad habit and been sure that God looked at me favourably because of what I saw as me making a big personal sacrifice. Look at what I am giving up for you God! Look at how good I am!
However, giving up things we love and are attached to or breaking a bad habit without deeper reflection can simply be ways we show God how strong we are or others how holy we are.
I can have great determination and will-power for 40 days!! On my own strength I can go to great lengths for the 40 days and nothing really changes beyond that.
But Lent isn’t simply about us giving up something or proving that we have willpower and can change our habits.
What we may not fully understand is that Lent is a season in which God wants to give us something. It is not all about us and what we think we are doing for God.
God wants to help us transform our lives and make us more free as people in the way we live our lives and love our families. God can transform us when we try to become the very best version of ourselves possible or as we become more holy.
Have you given up something, changed a habit or doing something extra as you prepare for Easter? Let’s remember that God is transforming our lives through our actions today!
PRAYER: Lord, here I am. This is me in all my imperfections and I need you today. Thank you for taking my efforts and sacrifices and in your strength transforming me to the best possible version of me I can be. Amen
