Lent is a season of 40 days to reflect upon Christ’s Sacrifice for us culminating in the celebration of the resurrection. This is how I used to see this Lenten season. Just recently I see and understand it quite differently.
This is a time where Grace is given to us so we can turn back to Jesus. Turn to Him for the first time. Turn to Him for the umpteenth time. The Holy Spirit uses these 40 days to ‘work’ on us in a good way. To become the best ME I can be. Who I was created to be?
Once again God’s Grace is present and we find ourselves (if we let Him) going deeper in our relationship with Him. When Easter finally is celebrated, we have become closer to our Lord. We truly know Him better, understand His Love for us better and appreciate His sacrifice more.
I remember a time when I was asked by a girlfriend to do Zumba Classes with her. I had never done any dancing, not even as a little girl. I learnt the “normal” ballroom steps in lower high school but the school I went to did not have enough boys. So, I learnt all the male parts to the dances and would lead the girls in their steps. (Luckily, Bruce could dance really well, or I would have been leading him around the dance floor at our wedding!)
When I was in my twenties, I went to a few bush dances. But Zumba?
We had a few laughs at our dance steps. My friend was a bit better than me, but we stayed down the back in the darkness of the room. At the end of the hour we were puffed from laughing, puffed out from trying to keep up but slowly, slowly every week we were becoming more proficient at the dance steps. We surprised ourselves! We became a bit fitter, could keep up and even knew what the next step might be! And did we enjoy ourselves and learn more about each other chatting, sharing? A decided yes!
Sometimes struggling through the days of Lent, trying to learn “new” steps, new ways of getting closer to God, meditating about Him, of how to fast, of trusting more in God is like those early Zumba classes.
Difficult and frustrating at times, even to the point of giving up – “it’s not for us” feeling.
But I want to encourage you to persevere, to push through and seek out that the happiness that only comes from finding HIM who brings true happiness. Brings all to completion. Brings that laughter, that true joy that we all seek.
So, go and do the steps you need to take, go learn the moves, go seek out that happiness that ONLY the Saviour can bring.
PRAYER: Lord, here I am. This is me in all my imperfections and I need you today. Thank you for this season of Grace where the Holy Spirit is working on me to change me into who I am meant to be. What moves do I need to learn today to bring me closer to you, the source of true happiness and joy? Amen.
