Lent 2019 – Day 37

Are You Listening

Thursday 11th April

I have come that they may have life and have it to the full. (John 10:10 NIV)

Be the better person, find yourself, help your self- esteem, become who you truly are. As I was sitting on the couch, I heard these words from three consecutive advertisements for products on television and not from some Christian program.

But they spoke to me. God can use words from programs, words on billboards, things we see, we hear or music on the radio to get our attention.

The Holy Spirit tries to speak to us even when we are not listening.

For some of us a whisper, a calling within us is enough.

For others it’s the ‘Mack Truck’ experience that is needed. This is described really well in the New Testament in the book of Acts, with Saul’s conversion. Saul was not going to listen to someone telling him. Remember he was at St Stephen’s martyrdom. He did not listen then to his conscience.  He needed a knock off a horse, a ‘Mack truck’ head-on collision to take notice. Saul became Paul, one of the most audacious evangelists for the growing Christian Church.

It is no different for each of us.

Our glorious God who loves us totally will send whispers or will send Mack trucks to reach us for the first time and any other time He desires to talk to us.

Hopefully, as we become more Christ-like we will hear the whispers of the Spirit guiding us and not need a Mack truck to be sent our way. But I know sometimes how stubborn I am. How proud I am in different areas of my Life. How weak I am in some areas of my Life, to not listen at times to the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes it seems easier not to change. I’m lazy. I want the easy route every time. Doing a workout in the gym tells me this.

But I’ll never achieve what I desire without change and definitely it does not make me happy to stay mediocre.

I am called (just like in the ads) to be the best Me.

Only knowing God and loving Him will bring eternal peace and joy to me.

That’s what Lent is all about – changing, becoming who we were originally created and called to be, so we find out that “…God so loved the world (us) that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. ”

PRAYER: Lord, here I am. This is me in all my imperfections and I need you today. Help me to pay attention and hear your whisperings or your Mac truck collisions if that is what I need because I want to become the best me, living my life to the full. Amen

  1. Thank you Rosemary for your timely message. That is the second call from God to really listen, and its only 6:15am. So hopefully I am hearing the whispers and in this instance at this time, have no need of a mack truck experience. Bless you and all your family and staff as you with grace are really listening and moving mountains in people’s lives.

  2. Thank you Rosemary and all. The daily thoughts and prayers are a wonderful inspiration to us all.
Open my ears Lord, help me to hear Your voice.

  3. Thanks Rosemary. Perfect message as we all continue to listen more and we do t have to wait for Mack truck to kick us off!
God bless you, Bruce and family for all what you are doing in bringing Gods presence closer to all of us Amen

  4. Thank you Rosemary. Yes God can use anything and anyone to speak to us! I have often used St Paul falling off his horse to encounter the Lord and convert, as possibly the best and only example for my loved one, when I pray or explain to others. I on the other hand ask the Lord for answers in many difficult situations as well as personal requests, only to find Him speak in the most surprising and unexpected ways!
Take for example, the other morning I was explaining to the Lord (who knows already!) how I don’t dream about Him in my sleep anymore. I recalled the last dream I had in not great detail to Him, while I opened my book on the daily readings and began to read that day’s gospel.
I was struck by the question I read from the Pharisees to Jesus “who are you?”
The dream I had concerned a conversation I had with my sister (who once was a Christian.) She asked me in the dream “who is Jesus?” I simply replied ” He is who He says He is”!!!! I read and reread the scripture passage John 8: 51-59 mesmerised. All I could think is that the Lord truly listens and knows me and my current circumstances and speaks to me in ways that I can’t even imagine!!! Thank You Lord.
God bless you Rosemary,Bruce and team

  5. Hello Rosemary
    Valerie again!
In my first email I sent you the wrong scripture passage. It is John 8:21-30 not John 8:51-59! It makes all the difference!!!
    Love Valerie

  6. Thanks even more and more Rosemary. Please God open my innermost ears to hear and follow. Don’t sent a Mac or a truck on my way. God your will not mine be done. Amen

  7. I pray the Lord will send whispers or Mack trucks to my husband for whom I worry and to some degree pity. He is a truly good man, but is not in touch with his faith, spirit, God.
Thank you for your words Rosemary, they really resonate, for I know I need Mack trucks at times too.

  8. Thank you Rosemary for today’s message reminding us to be more attentive to the prompting of the Holy Spirit that ministers to us through any means it deems necessary. I pray for the grace to trust and obey such promptings at all times in Jesus’ name. Amen!

  9. Yes Lord. At the beginning of Lent, I put aside some days just to be still and listen to Your voice. So many distractions came and it was very noisy. Please Lord teach me how to listen to Your voice and pray. I pray for my brothers and sisters on this forum who have expressed the same need / desire as me that You will direct us. Holy Spirit, May You make Your presence known to us we pray. Prompt us in a way that we will know that it is You as there are deceiving spirits that roam around seeking whom to devour.

  10. Dear one, if I were you I would do this 24-7-365! The world would certainly be a better place! That “little shot in the arm” that comes out of reading everyday is just what we need to immunize us from the world contamination! Thanks for all you have done, your entire team to make the Lenten Season what He would want it to be!!!
