Jottings from my Journal

Joyce Meyer, a well-known Christian author and speaker, once said “eat the cookie and buy the shoes.” Not literally but do something that refreshes you so you can go again.  This will be different for different people depending upon their personality, their “burdens,” their life circumstances, etc

But this refreshment only caters for part of you – the physical/emotional part.  What about the spiritual side of you that needs re-energising, re-focussing, so that you can go again?

God refers to himself in Jeremiah 2 as ‘the spring of living water.’  The word refreshment always brings to my mind a picture of fresh, running, spilling over, thirst-quenching water. This is who God is – either separate as God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit, or all THREE together.  Even if I am doing ok, I need this ‘living water,” or if I’m feeling bruised, weary, and burdened and need this refreshment for my soul.

Whatever the circumstance of ME right now, if I don’t get this filling of water, this rehydration, I can either feel ‘faint’ very quickly in my Life or maybe feel light-headed and not myself for a while.

I need lots of gulps, not just sips.

We forget that just as important as water is life daily for our body, so too, God’s spirit is life daily for our soul. If we do not spend time ‘drinking’ in his spirit, soon we live life very dehydrated.

This then has consequences of fatigue, lack or wrong focus, negativity, impatience, anger, dryness, which can lead to other wrong choices. I remember some good advice a wise person gave me many years ago. Don’t make decisions for your life late at night, (or early in the morning for those night owls), especially when you are tired. Your judgement can be clouded, and so you don’t make right choices.

So, drink well, deeply and frequently at His table.

In Lamentations 3:19 it states,

“I remember my affliction and my wandering the bitterness and the gall.
I well remember them and my soul is downcast within me
Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope
Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning, great is your faithfulness, I say to myself.
‘The Lord is my portion therefore I will wait for him.”

So, I encourage you firstly to say these words to yourself – The Lord’s compassion never Fails, Every morning is a brand New Start with Our God of Hope, then ask God to send the Grace to believe in The Hope that He sends to us.

Caution is needed to not focus on the bad things- the bitterness and gall – for humanly, we can so easily do this. If you get nine people out of ten saying you’re doing an ok job, but one out of the ten criticizes, which one do you remember?

Then secondly, spend time waiting for the Lord to refresh you and it is suggested here and in The Lord’s own Prayer – The Our Father- do this Daily!

So, Eat the cookie (you won’t put on any weight)
Buy the shoes (just budget well)
And Drink well and often for your soul.

May these jottings from my journal inspire you to believe in and fall in love with Christ- the hope of the world, as stated in Jeremiah 17:7, ‘Blessed is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord and whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord!’
